Studio to focus on AAA online action games

Cold Iron Studios, formed of Cryptic Studios talent, breaks cover

San Jose studio Cold Iron debuted today, declaring themselves a "fully-funded" AAA studio that’d be focussing on online action games, and they’re working on their debut title using the Unreal Engine 4, and they already have a prototype.

The debut in itself isn’t the big news here, Cold Iron itself quietly founded last year and has been recruiting quietly since then, but the big news is that the company was founded by trio of talent from Cryptic Studios, famous in the online space for their work with multiple MMO’s, among them City of Heroes, Neverwinter and Star Trek Online.

The founding team is CEO Craig Zinkievich, CTO Shannon Posniewski and Creative Director Matt Highison, all bringing years of experience in the online space to the new company.

CEO Zinkievich held the role of COO at Cryptic, working for a dozen years on City of Heroes, Star Trek Online, and Neverwinter. CTO Posniewski spent a similar amount of time with the company, ended up as an executive producer who worked on pretty much every title Cryptic worked on since he joined the company in 2003. Highison is the least experienced of the three but has still been with Cryptic since 2007, until his departure in November 2015.

"We couldn’t be more excited to finally introduce the world to Cold Iron," Zinkievich said in a statement. "We decided to start this studio last year with exactly one goal in mind: to create compelling games that we wanted to play absolutely all the time. To do that, we put together a pitch, built a great prototype, got fully-funded, and are now building an unstoppable team. We’re working hard on a AAA online action game that is literally out of this world, and we cannot wait to share it with you."
