CW’s Mortal Kombat TV special watched by 0.3% of US households

American network The CW aired the final part of Machinima’s Chasing the Cup docuseries on Monday night to an audience of around 346,800 viewers.

The online series had previously whittled a tournament bracket of Mortal Kombat X players down to just five competing for the biggest share of a $100,000 prize pool.

Nielsen ratings for the evening put Chasing the Cup at 0.3 in the target demographic of 18-49, while the Grammy Awards it was scheduled up against managed a 7.4 in the same age bracket.

Though not quite the 8.5m peak primetime audience figures of their competitors, the viewership was higher than last year’s Heroes of the Dorm finals on ESPN which managed a Nielsen rating of 0.1.

Machinima’s chief content officer Daniel Tibbets maintains a positive outlook on the series, however, stating that the CW partnership could continue.

"As video games and e-sports become more mainstream, broadcast networks are looking for content to attract this highly valuable audience," he said in a statement. "Machinima’sChasing the Cupis an incredible series and we look forward to working with the CW on [it] for a long time."
