Profiling each team and their game in the key development contest

Dare to Be Digital 2009 Preview

In a week’s time, 14 of the most promising upcoming development teams will be debuting the games they have created during the Edinburgh Festival.

These teams, all participants in the yearly Dare to be Digital competition put together by the University of Abertay, hail from around the world and offer genuinely original and creative ideas that use new interfaces and take on established areas of game design.

Both consumers and the industry are able to go along to Dare ProtoPlay, which allows hands on time with the prototypes – and after an industry vote one contender will be named as the best on show. The top three will also be eligible for highly coveted BAFTA Video Games Ones to Watch Award next year.

Dare ProtoPlay takes place from August 14th to 16th as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. AS well as showcasing new talent and their IPs, the event also includes other events such as: a music workshop by Yann Seznec, who will use Wacom pen tablets to create music instruments; Abertay PhD research programmes based on video games technology; a Dare iPhone game preview in association with Digital Goldfish; a special Career Workshop in association with BAFTA targeted for teenagers and much more.

Here, we profile the teams showing of their games next week. They hail from around the world – Canada, China, England, India, Ireland and Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland and Wales – and have spent the last 10 weeks refining their ideas using top of the range equipment and mentoring from from a ‘Developer Accord’ formed by major video game professionals.

Whether you are in the industry and in the city to see the accompanying Edinburgh Interactive Festival or want to along to see some innovative new ideas, read on to find out more about the entrants.

Don’t forget: entry is free for the event which is open 10am to 6pm from Friday, August 14th to Sunday, 16th August and takes place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.
