Successful applicants will have chance to win a BAFTA 'Ones to Watch' Award

Dare to be Digital 2013 applications open

The annual Dare to be Digital development competition is now taking submissions.

Run by the University of Abertay, hundreds of students are expected to come together to build working game prototypes in just nine weeks

Students will be split off into 15 teams, with the three winning teams nominated for the BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award.

Development teams must consist of five postgraduates or undergraduates and contain a balance of artists and programmers.

Applicants must also submit a pitch for their game idea, which can be done in video form, which will then be looked at by a set of judges as they shortlist teams for interview.

“Dare to be Digital is a really unique way of getting into the games industry – one which has launched hundreds and hundreds of careers with some of the biggest games companies in the world,” Dare to be Digital director Gregor White told Develop.

"Everyone who takes part in Dare improves their skills immeasurably – there simply isn’t another way of learning so much, and making so many industry contacts, in nine weeks.”

Last year’s three Dare to Be Digital winners who will move on to the 2013 BAFTA Ones to Watch award were Raptor Games for virtual reality horror title Project Thanos, Loan Wolf Games for platformer Pixel Story, and Kind of a Big Deal for puzzle title Starcrossed.

Other awards handed out at last year’s event included the Channel 4 award, which handed Loan Wolf Games £25,000 to commission their game.

The Team Choice Award meanwhile went to Team Iso for strategy game IsoChronous, while Raptor Games won the Intel Visual Computing Tools audience award.

Dare to be Digital 2013 will take place between June 10th and August 11th.

The deadline for applications is April 9th.
