A student team that emerged as one of the victors at this year’s Dare to be Digital games development contest have see the winning game released on Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace.
In the five months since the 2012 round of the Abertay University supported contest concluded, Finnish outfit Kind of a Big Deal – which also secured a BAFTA One to Watch nomination for its success at the event – has secured a publisher deal for its game Starcrossed.
“We’re delighted that Starcrossed has now been released for Windows Phone, just a few months after we complete Dare to be Digital and received our BAFTA nomination," said Kind of a Big Deal’s Kimi Sulopuisto.
“To be the quickest Dare game ever to hit a full commercial release is incredible, as is getting featured as a top game on the Windows Phone Marketplace. Taking part in Dare to be Digital has really changed our lives.
“I’d absolutely encourage anyone looking to make their own games to enter Dare to be Digital – you’ve nothing to lose, and you could win so much.”
Finnish company Kajak Games is publishing the 2D platformer, which has already enjoyed time as a featured app across the Windows Phone Marketplace.
The other winning games at this year’s Dare to be Digital contest were Pixel Story and Project Thanatos, also nominated for the One to Watch award at the next video games BAFTAS.
Applications for Dare to be Digital 2013 will open on 22 January at the contest’s official website.
