Executive director leaving after almost nine years; hunt begins for a successor

Della Rocca to depart IGDA

Jason Della Rocca has today announced he will step down from his post as executive director of the International Game Developers Association at the end of next month.

After eight and a half years with the IGDA, he is choosing to move on to a new venture.

"There are some exciting personal opportunities that I want to pursue that simply require me to strike out on my own and step away from my role as the IGDA’s executive director," he said in a post on his blog, adding that more information will be revealed post-GDC. (Although he hastily adds: "And no, I’m not starting a game development studio.")

Under Della Rocca, the IGDA membership grew from 500 to 15,000 members, expanded its network of chapters to over 70 locations worldwide, and established the Studio Affiliation program which today includes over 120.

All that while the organisation – and Della Rocca specifically – vocally campaigned on issues such as developer quality of life and games as a form of expression worthy of free speech protections.

"Jason has tirelessly served the IGDA for nearly nine years, and we are thankful for all that he has done for the community", said Jen MacLean, IGDA chairperson and SVP of Business Development, 38 Studios.

"We wish him the best of luck with his future endeavors and look forward to an exciting year for the IGDA."

"I am humbled and honored to have been a steward of the IGDA’s mission," added Della Rocca in the official statement about his departure. "Each day was a race to keep up with the passion and energy of members and volunteers in their drive to advance games. I am forever grateful for the enriching experience, and look forward to assisting the Board on a smooth transition."

The hunt is now on for his successor – Della Rocca will help the organisation’s board in the transition, and the group will also ‘appoint a task force to coordinate the search’. Those interested are encouraged to contact search@igda.org.
