Destiny 2 is 2017’s biggest launch – but shifts less than half of its predecessor at Week One retail

Destiny 2 has gone straight in at No.1 in the UK weekly charts, making it the biggest launch of the year so far. However, sales were 58 per cent down on the original title from 2014, suggesting that more consumers may have shifted to digital purchases – especially considering that Bungie tweeted over the weekend that the game had 1.2 million concurrent players online around the world.

58 per cent of Destiny 2 sales went to PS4, with 42 per cent on Xbox One. The original Destiny, by comparison, saw a more even split, with 51 per cent on Sony platforms (including both the PS4 and PS3) and 49 per cent on Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Given that the install base of Destiny 1 players in the UK is huge, the numbers done by its sequel at retail are somewhat dissapointing. The game’s PS4 version was actually outdone by newcomer Horizon: Zero Dawn for Week One sales.

Speaking of Sony, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was pushed down to No.2 in the UK weekly chart, with sales falling by 49 per cent week-on-week.

Elsewhere in the charts, a number of Xbox One titles saw a lift in sales after a retailer price promotion on the original Xbox One S hardware, including Forza Horizon 3 which jumped from No.10 to No.3 after a 79 per cent rise in sales.

Bethesda also had a good week, with Fallout 4 climbing several places to No.5 after a 102 per cent rise in sales, and Dishonored 2 jumping back up to No.8 after a 129 per cent sales boost.

F1 2017, meanwhile, fell from No.3 to No.7 after a respectable 49 per cent decline in sales, while Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle for the Nintendo Switch fell to No.10 after a 69 per cent drop.

As for new entries in the charts, Knack II debuted at No.12, while Monster Hunter Stories entered the charts at No.21. The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ also finally saw a release on Switch, earning itself a place at No.36.
