Destiny 2 will have hybrid servers, both peer-to-peer and dedicated at once

Destiny 2 has been tipped as a potential esports, with several people asking whether the now-confirmed PC version would be using dedicated servers.

This is a big deal, especially after peer-to-peer servers on the PC is largely credited with the death of Destiny’s Activision stablemate Call of Duty’s esports community on the PC. Bungie have recognised the severity of the question and answered in a blogpost that, honestly, hasn’t given a particularly clear answer.

Is Destiny 2 on PC going to use dedicated servers or peer-to-peer? Bungie say the answer is… yes.

The blog post has an interview with Matt Segur, Destiny 2’s engineering lead. He’s outlined some sort of hybrid betwen the two models:

“Destiny 2 uses a hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology, just like Destiny 1. The server is authoritative over how the game progresses, and each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities. This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting – no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with.”

Still, Segur is confident this won’t affect things, saying that Bungie has “invested heavily in new server infrastructure”.

Segur also went over some of the worries regarding to cheating in Destiny 2, explaining that for those who try to cheat in Bungie’s shooter life in Destiny 2 will be “nasty, brutish and short.”

You can see the full interview on the blog post, and Destiny 2 will be coming later this year to consoles, with a PC launch date slightly later.
