Destiny hits 9.5m registered users, Destiny 2 already in development

Activision has said that Bungie’s shooter Destiny has attracted 9.5m registered users since its September 9th release.

The publisher says that makes it the largest new IP launch in history and ranks among the ten largest video game launches ever in the US.

However, when pressed by analyst Andrew Crum on the game’s actual sales numbers, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg admitted that while the 9.5m figure has a relationship to sell-through… it’s not exact because some people have more than one identity”.

I think by any measure, Destiny is off to a great start,” he added. And despite the large investment – or maybe because of that large investment – we were able to be profitable from day one, and we think it’s only a matter of time now before it becomes our next billion-dollar franchise.”

Hirshberg also admitted that work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full-game release”. The only question now is whether Destiny 2 will arrive in 2015 or 2016.

Activision’s financials revealed a nine per cent increase in net revenues to $753m for the quarter ending September. 67 per cent of that revenue came from digital products. Net losses hit $23m, down from the previous year’s $56m net income.
