Well over 250 developers around the globe are working on Chris Roberts’ prominent Kickstarter success story Star Citizen.
The game has currently raised more than $46m and now has five studios behind it, encompassing a grand total of 268 people.
This was revealed in an interview with VentureBeat, in which the Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander and Star Citizen, shared a little more about how the latter is being developed.
"I think at last count [our headcount] was 268, between contractors and in-house," he said. "We have three internal studios – one here in Los Angeles, one in Austin and one in Manchester.
"The Manchester one my brother heads up. It was formed from the core nucleus of his team at Traveller’s Tales. Then were working with two external studios, one in Montreal and one in Colorado. Between the five studios, we’re all spearheading the different elements of the game."

Roberts says that the modular nature of the game allows each studio to lead development on a different aspect. As we’ve covered, Foundry 42 is handling the single-player campaign Squadron 42, while the Los Angeles team is focused on the combat. Austin and Montreal are developing the persistent universe and planetside action, while Star Citizen’s first-person shooter sections are being developed in Colorado.
"It all gets integrated together, but that allows a smaller team to work on an aspect and not get overwhelmed by such an ambitious game," said Roberts.
