German online games giant Bigpoint is closing down its mobile operations and laying off 29 staff, it has been revealed.
As reported by Gamesindustry, the publisher has also cancelled the majority of its mobile projects that had been in development.
Instead of developing its own mobile games internally, the publisher said it will still work with external studios, with the possibility of investing.
Also following the news that the Reisberger brothers had left the studio, who had helped grow Bigpoint into one of the biggest online games publishers around, chief communications officer Nils Holger Henning has also quit the studio.
Henning has left to establish a new company, with investment from Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz.
"I’m a big believer in mobile, it’s going to change many things in the games industry. But I also think it’s not the right time at the moment to be in this market because to generate revenues in this market is very tough," said Hubertz.
"For that reason we decided also to close our internal mobile games development. We will not continue to create mobile games internally.
"We had around ten games in development, some of them are finished and will launch in the next few weeks but most of them will be completely closed and shut down."
