Studio confirms cuts after release of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified

2K Marin lays off ‘majority’ of staff, claim sources

2K Marin laid off a sizable portion of its workforce today, claim sources close to the matter.

The studio recently launched The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, but a 2K representative has now told Polygon that the company has cut jobs at the studio.

“We can confirm staff reductions at 2K Marin,” he said.

“While these were difficult decisions, we regularly evaluate our development efforts and have decided to reallocate creative resources. Our goal to create world-class video game titles remains unchanged."

He didn’t say exactly how many workers have been let go, but other sources told Polygon the studio had laid off a “majority” of its staff.

One went so far as to say they were “100 percent sure" that 2K Marin as we know it is closed.

The news comes shortly after the announcement of a new 2K studio in the Bay Area helmed by Rod Fergusson, the former lead of Gears of War and producer of BioShock Infinite.

Another source said the only developers safe from the layoffs were those already moving to the new studio, which jibes with the official statement’s claim that “creative resources” were being reallocated.

Several developers have taken to Twitter to say their jobs were cut, including senior sound designer Byron Evora and game designer Ryan Mattson, who marked his five year anniversary at the studio today.

“It sucks, but it’s the life we choose,” wrote Evora. “Our only option is to keep moving forward, right?”
