3D Realms co-producing Kickstarter Apogee revival Rad Rodgers

Interceptor Entertainment has managed to team up with some of the developers behind the very games it is paying homage to with its new crowdfunded project.

Rad Rodgers is a 3D side-scrolling platformer designed to revive the style of gameplay seen in the likes of Commander Keen, Cosmo and the pre-FPS Duke Nukem titles. The Kickstarter campaign confirms that 3D Realms is on board to co-produce the title.

The long-running studio is offering Interceptor guidance and operational support, as it has to other indies.

"Apogee used to rule the top ten PC shareware and sales charts in the early ’90s with our platformer releases and a dozen others,” said 3D Realms and Apogee founder Scott Miller.

“The idea of developing a similar style game with today’s tech is extremely appealing to me. So while the Apogee brand is under completely new management, we can still involve key talent at 3D Realms to co-produce Rad Rodgers, and give Interceptor the right design guidance to ensure that the game lives up to the high standards of the platformers’ golden era."

Rad Rodgers is being developed in Unreal Engine 4 and stars a young boy who teams up with his foul-mouthed, fourth-wall-breaking sentient games console when he is sucked into a video game-like world.

Interceptor says it aims to combine “this mostly forgotten genre” with modern technology and “a Rick and Morty sense of humour”.

The game is currently in development for PC and PS4, with more platforms planned if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its stretch goals.
