Publisher partners with Indiecade to run the contest; Submissions close December 31st

Activision restarts $500k indie contest

Activision has opened up the second phase of the Independent Games Competition – the publisher’s $500,000 search for US-based indie talent.

Developers with a new game idea can submit it to Activision with the chance to win a share of $250,000.

The first phase of the contest, where the first quarter of a million dollars was handed out, concluded in July. Californian indie Peter Angstadt took first place, and a cash prize of $175,000, with San Franciscan group Engient winning second place and a $75,000 prize.

Activision subsequently told Develop it wouldn’t be publishing games from the contest.

Submissions for the second phase of the Independent Games Competition are now open until December 31st. Developers will not forfeit their IP by entering the contest, Activision said.

The same prize share ($175,000 for first, $75,000 for second) remains, though this time IndieCade has been brought in to judge the contest.

"This competition underscores Activision’s commitment to fostering creativity in the independent development community," said Activision studios boss Dave Stohl.

"Many of us began our careers as indies, so we are very proud to offer this kind of support and encouragement to a couple of the industry’s young visionaries."

the contest is not open to European studios.
