Ages of Wonders developer Triumph Studios acquired by Paradox Interactive

Swedish developer and publisher, Paradox Interactive has acquired Dutch developer Triumph studios.

The developer of the Age of Wonder and Overlord series was sold for €4 million in a deal that could rise to €21 million based on performance and is to be paid over a period of years.

The deal, according to the statement from Paradox Interactive, includes the IPs from Triumph along with all of the assets and the current team so no losses are expected. Paradox intends to use the studio to increase its market reach and development capacity.

"“Triumph Studios is a developer of our own heart," said Paradox Interactive CEO, Fredrik Wester. "They are world-leading within their niche and have built a large and dedicated community over the years, counting quite a few Paradox employees among their hardcore fans. We have great faith in the Triumph team and leadership, and our main focus now is to ensure that they can continue to create their magic under new ownership.”

Based in Delft, The Netherlands, Truimph Studios was founded in 1997 and has earned a reputation for developing in-depth, fun strategy games for PC with the Age of Wonders strategy series and also on Xbox 360 and PS3 for the Overlord action-adventure series, which was published by Codemasters.

Paradox Interactive is well known for their grand strategy games and in addition to working on the sequel for Pillars of Eternity are also working on porting the first game to PS4 and Xbox One.

On the Triumph Studios blog, founders Arno van Wingerden and Lennert Sars said, "throughout our history we have worked with varying degrees of independence, from full-on indie to close cooperation with publishers. After self-publishing Age of Wonders 3, which creatively and commercially turned out tremendously well, we realised that development – in close relation to our fans – is the thing that we care about most. Additionally, the games market is constantly evolving and we drew the conclusion that expanding our publishing efforts for the limited number of games we release would be inefficient.

So we were super excited when Paradox proposed joining their family. Many of us are huge fans of Paradox games, so we’re very much looking forward to sharing knowledge with their renowned Grand Strategy developers. As a development studio we will keep on flying our own flag, but with the help of Paradox and the continued support of you -our fans- we’ll be able to take our games to another level, and contribute to the continued development of a strategy powerhouse.
