This June Bigpoint founder and CEO Heiko Hubertz is set to speak at the Gamehorizon Conference in Gateshead, UK.
His session, titled ‘The Future of Online Games’ will look at the platforms, business models and content that looks set to shape the future of the ever lucrative online space.
Here Develop catches up with Hubertz to find out about his plans for the conference.
What attracted Bigpoint to return to this year’s GameHorizon Conference as a speaker?
The GameHorizon Conference is a very successful international video games conference that is a must-attend event for us. The quality of the speakers and papers are always excellent, providing an outstanding atmosphere for conference members to interact and to get to know each other.
What will make your talk stand out at the conference, and in the wider industry?
As a leader in the online gaming sector, Bigpoint has a unique perspective on what makes core and casual gamers happy and what is essential to ensuring industry growth. I will talk about how online gaming has evolved, and also on where we go from here. In the end, it is for the audience to decide if they find my talk interesting.
What game development trends do you think are shaping the future today?
In terms of game development, I believe that we will see a lot of new mobile games launch, and not only casual titles. Also, tablet PCs are mid-term growth drivers for mobile gaming that will most likely result in high revenues starting in 2012 or 2013.
Playing video games is the number one use for tablets, such as the iPad. Especially Apple, with its iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch drives this segment’s dynamic growth. Mobile devices will continue to evolve to redeem the classic PC game pad.
As a developer, it’s very important to understand that it’s not simply enough to transfer games onto tablet PCs. They need to be specifically adapted for the device itself. I strongly believe in the future of tablet PCs and especially the Android series.
What projects are currently keeping Bigpoint busy?
We’re always deeply focused on making our existing games better and adding new features for our users. So there are a lot of teams still working on already released products like Farmerama, DarkOrbit, ZooMumba, and Battlestar Galactica Online, which was only recently released into open beta and quickly attracted more than one million players.
We’re also working on additional Hollywood IPs with blockbuster potential like The Mummy and Universal Monsters, on the fantasy MMO Drakensang, and on more casual games like RamaCity or ToonRacer. There are of course also a few games we haven’t announced yet.
What do you think the biggest change will be in the games industry in the next two years?
What might have been initially viewed as an anomaly is the ever-growing role that women play in the popularity of games. As much as casual games appeal to an older demographic, they are just as popular with female players.
Marketers and game developers are lining up to find, understand, and ultimately woo the women. Changing user demographics and changing consumer behaviour will impact all segments of the entertainment industry.
