Today Develop has launched a three-week focus on Canada’s games industry, in which we bring you an unmissable overview of a country famed for its forward-thinking attitude to tax breaks and its high-profile studios.
As well as bringing you profiles of the country’s leading developers, tech firms and service providers, such as Funcom, Eidos Montreal, Autodesk, Audiokinetic, Enzyme Labs and Ubisoft Toronto, we’ve also spoken to a number of regional bodies and government officials involved in supporting games companies that establish a presence in Canada’s key provinces.
Starting with an overview of Québec, which has seen a 560 per cent increase in the number people employed in the territory’s games sector in recent years, we spoke with the director of Investissement Québec’s London office Luc Carignan.
“With a talented and creative workforce, low operating costs and generous state support, Québec is a world-leader in the gaming industry and attracts the best players,” insisted Carignan. “Leading developers, world-class software publishers and innovative studios all play a central role by creating a dynamic gaming environment.”
Today Develop has also published a profile of Ubisoft Québec, in which studio CEO Yannis revealed what he sees as the biggest milestone for the internationally renowned studio.
Asked about the achievements that have defined the studio’s success Yannis revealed: "Looking back, we can’t answer this without mentioning the release of the first Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. Definitely, this was the beginning of it all, and not only for us in the studio but also, for the gaming industry in Montreal."
