A statement from Eve Online reads:
"They used to resell EVE time codes, but there shouldn’t be any way for hackers to access EVE account information unless the user who had bought them used the same information."
The original information on games affected stemmed from the PlaySpan website on titles it supports. I have now removed mentions of the titles until further clarification has been made.]
Hackers have breached and leaked the personal information of millions of PlaySpan Marketplace users online.
Private details compromised included user IDs, email addresses and encrypted passwords.
In a statement to Develop, a PlaySpan spokesperson insisted however that there is no evidence that credit, debit or pre-paid card data had been accessed.
The virtual monetisation firm has locked all Marketplace accounts and has asked all users to reset their passwords whilst an investigation and analysis is carried out on the breach.
The PlaySpan Marketplace site meanwhile has been closed down permanently.
The virtual goods monetisation platform is used in more than 1,000 games to power virtual goods and currency transactions.
As a precaution, PlaySpan has also advised users to reset their passwords on other websites.
"When PlaySpan detected the breach, we immediately shut down the hacker’s access to our systems and took steps to protect our customers’ PlaySpan accounts," a PlaySpan spokesperson told Develop.
"We then commenced a comprehensive forensic analysis and are working with law enforcement to investigate the crime. As a precaution, we have already locked all user accounts and closed the PlaySpan Marketplace site."
The spokesperson added: “We sincerely apologise for any frustration or inconvenience this incident has caused our customers. We know PlaySpan’s business depends on consumer trust. Security is a top priority for us, and we are redoubling our efforts to strengthen PlaySpan’s overall system security.”
PlaySpan was acquired by global payments firm Visa for $190 million in May last year, and at the time had a reported 28 million users.
More than two million customers have registered accounts on the PlaySpan marketplace, of which a spokesperson said there are 117,000 active users.
