Dare to be Digital 2012 team Fortified Games talks exclusively to Develop about working on their entry title Castle Crusade

Dare Blogs – Fortified Games

Castle Crusade is a 3D, turn-based, physics strategy game on the iPad. The game is designed for two players, pass-and-play, and focuses around two rival castles that must battle it out for victory.

The game boasts some of the most realistic destruction seen in an iPad game to date. As a visual style it falls into the category of stylised realism with a dark, sombre, fantasy atmosphere.

I couldn’t be more impressed with the standard set by the motivated and highly talented individuals in this competition. The experience of being immersed in such an atmosphere of dedication, interest and drive to produce high quality work is so inspiring.

Due to the short time frame we have to develop our game, the experience has of course been quite stressful at times but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

I’ve learnt a lot of things, but three of them stand out:

1) It’s important to stay true to your vision and make the game that you, personally, want to play – you’ll only work hard and passionately on a game if you’re going to enjoy playing it at the end.

2) If you only have nine weeks to create a game it’s best to keep it simple.

3) Making a game is easy – making a fun game is a different story.

I was quite apprehensive for ProtoPlay. I’m incredibly excited to be finished and to finally be able to say I helped create a fully functioning game.

But on the other hand I’m quite nervous to know what the general public and my friends and family think of the creation we have brought to fruition.

I think seeing people playing our game and possibly doing stuff we didn’t anticipate or intend could potentially be quite upsetting and frustrating.

However, if all goes well and the game is well received at ProtoPlay we will definitely be considering carrying the game on into the future and bringing it into a finished and full product.
