The Dare to be Digital 2014 team talks to Develop about working on their entry title Sagittarius

Dare Blogs: Too Mainstream’s on-rails shooter for the Oculus Rift

What’s your game?
Sagittarius is a first-person on-rails shooter made for the Oculus Rift. In the game, you embody a spy that infiltrates an enemy base and is caught while stealing battle plans. The game starts as your character escapes through the enemy encampment on the back of a chariot.

The character is equipped with a crossbow which is aimed using the Oculus Rift. The objective of the game is to survive the onslaught of enemies as your chariot races through enemy lines towards the safety of your base.

What has the Dare experience been like?
The experience has truly been phenomenal. Before Dare started, we had a concrete production plan chalked out. Unfortunately some of our team members faced issues in acquiring a visa to get to Dundee and hence our actual production was delayed for quite some time. However, once the team got together, everyone put in the extra effort that was required to bounce back and finish the project.

Also, this was the first project most of the guys have worked on outside of the university environment and we have gained a lot of positive experience regarding game development from it. The support from the mentors as well as our other competitors and colleagues has enabled us to add quite a lot to the game.

What have you learned from Dare?
Since this was our first project outside of university, all of us have learnt a lot about development practices and time management. Getting the game ready in the short amount of time has taught us how to work smart and be more efficient.

Are you looking forward to ProtoPlay?
Most definitely. We can’t wait till the time other people get a chance of experiencing of putting on an Oculus Rift and getting the thrill of having 50 guys chase you while you try to take them out. We are confident that the game will be much loved by the crowd at ProtoPlay.

What are your ambitions after Dare?
Although we are confident of getting nominated for the BAFTA Ones to Watch Award, in the worst case we will be developing the game further. The on-rails part of the game is just a transition in our overall game design of a first-person stealth game.

Some guys on the team will be going back to university for their final year of Masters, so we will definitely be developing the game further.

Follow Too Mainstream on Twitter and Facebook to learn more about their game.

Dare ProtoPlay and Indie Fest is on 7th-10th August in Dundee’s Caird Hall and City Square, with all 15 Dare student games on show, as well as over 30 indie games.
