Dare to be Digital gets £1m expansion

Student game development competition Dare to be Digital will continue its rapid expansion into 2008, with promoters Abertay University increasing financial support for next year’s event.

Dare 2007 was the biggest in the competition’s history, expanding the host centres to Belfast and Guildford as well as Dundee. The extra funding for 2008 will be used to help double the amount of student teams and further develop relationships with more host centres, including the possibility of an overseas centre.

“Dare to be Digital has come of age and is now attracting serious attention from throughout the industry and beyond,” said Paul Durrant, director of Dare to be Digital.

“There has also been a very high level of interest in all of the teams from 2007 and in the IP they created, with several commercial negotiations underway. We now working on transferring the model into other sectors of the creative industries, and we are poised to scale up not only the contest itself but also Dare ProtoPlay into the definitive independent IP and talent showcase to consumers and industry as we reach critical mass over the next couple of years.”
