Over five thousand backers have pledged their support for what some call a dead genre.
Today Double Fine productions launched a new adventure game and documentary series to be funded by the online crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter.
Double Fine founder and veteran adventure games designer Tim Schafer announced the project at five-thirty p.m. and five hours later over $250,000 has been raised.
2 Player Productions will be documenting the project, and posting monthly video updates available only to backers. In addition, a community will be set up for contributors to share their thoughts with the developers, and will even vote when Double Fine is unsure which road to take.
The campaign itself is pushing the boundaries of Kickstarter, and some rewards had to be placed on Double Fine’s homepage, as Kickstarter did not offer enough flexibility with its pledge system.
"You see, some pledges are so premium, they break the Kickstarter system. They’re just that good. So we have to post them here. These are the Premium Rewards. The Glengary Rewards. These Rewards are for Closers," said Tim on the Double Fine website
Rewards range from a preorder copy of the game at $15 to an original shrinkwrapped copy of one of Schafer’s greatest hits- Day of the Tentacle- priced at $125,000.
