[Intel sponsored article] Find out how to create and sell games with free 29-page ebook

Download Intel’s free app development guide

If your goal for 2012 is to release a successful game app, Intel has a free book that could help you.

It’s thought-provoking and packed with tips, and covers the journey from coming up with an app idea through to selling it in Intel’s store. While it won’t teach you to program, it does offer advice on choosing the right technologies, and gives you some pointers for where you can find out more information.

The guide is 29 pages long and available as a PDF, with other formats to follow. The book starts with some guidelines on what makes a good app, what the success factors are for an app, and what makes an app easy to use. It then looks at the skills and resources you will need, some of which you can access by partnering with others who also want to make an app, and others of which you might be able to learn or might have already.

There’s a discussion of how you can come up with an idea for your app (including the prohibited content you should steer clear of), the app development process and the importance of testing.

The technologies explored include the Intel AppUp Creator beta, which enables you to rapidly create content-led apps and ebooks without coding; DarkBasic, an easy programming language optimised for game creation; C/C++ and .Net, leading high performance programming languages; the highly portable Java; and the Adobe AIR platform, which enables you to use Flash-like tools to create desktop applications.

The guide demystifies the process of getting your apps into the app store, taking a step by step guide through registration, integrating the app store code with your app, packaging your app, adding sales information to the store, beta testing app downloads and making sure your app is validated. The book also explains how much money you can make for your downloads.

With the internet, we have access to so much information online, but it’s rare to get a comprehensive guide in a single place. This ebook doesn’t aim to make you an ace programmer (you do still have to put the time in!), but it will spark off some ideas you can use to shape your journey, and perhaps give you the insights you need to make sure your app is a success.
