Netherlands based games incubator Dutch Game Garden recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with a meeting of the region’s developers, students and others from the industry. It was an opportunity to assess the state of the Dutch games industry and for the company to pat itself on the back for helping grow businesses in the area. With over 40 companies housed within the incubator, Dutch Game Garden aims to create job opportunities and economic growth, not only by giving games studio a space to work, but by encouraging cooperation and networking.
“Game makers in the Netherlands can be each other’s competitor, but also likely need each other,” says Maarten Brands, chairman of the Dutch Game Garden board. “That is the strong point of joining Dutch Game Garden: you become part of this network and that is super valuable when making business deals.”
The influence of the Dutch Game Garden extends outside the Netherlands, with co-founder of the Canadian game accelerator Execution Labs giving a speech at the birthday celebration about how inspirational they find the company. “The community building work of the Dutch Game Garden has served as an inspiration for my own ecosystem building efforts, and a benchmark for other groups around the world helping game startups and independent studios succeed,” he says. “Quite literally, the seeds to the future success of the Dutch game industry are planted and nurtured every day in this valuable space.”
