Comic publisher clearing way for entry into games market?

EA dissolves partnership with Marvel

EA has terminated its deal with Marvel Comics after just one game, GameTap reports.

"EA and Marvel have jointly agreed to discontinue development of the Marvel titles under the EA Games Label. This was a business decision based on EA’s portfolio strategy," an EA rep told the site.

The cancellation of the deal, which was made in 2004 but only resulted in 2005’s Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, comes after Microsoft’s rumoured cancellation of its Cryptic-developed MMO Marvel Universe Online.

Develop has been told by multiple sources in the past that the comics giant has expressed a wish to be more involved in the games market, in a similar way to how it created Marvel Studios for more control over films created from its properties.

This latest deal dissolution raises further questions – including the possibility that Marvel could actively be seeking an end to its previous agreements in preparation for a move into the games market.
