New US office expected to employ up to 60 staff by the end of the year

EA opens LA DICE to work on Star Wars games

EA has opened a new DICE studio in Los Angeles to work primarily on new Stars Wars games.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson said it had opened an LA-based office as there was an “extreme talent pool” in the city, with other leading studios such as Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward also based in the city.

The developer is currently in the process of recruiting for the new office, which is set to officially open its doors later this month.

The studio is expected to employ around 60 staff by the end of the year, and will also bring in developers who worked on Medal of Honor at Danger Close.

"There is an extreme talent pool over that we want a part of," said Troedsson.

"It’s no secret that our main competitor is there.”

It is currently unclear what the future holds for Danger Close, with its last release having received a poor critical reception. The opening of EA DICE could spell the end of Danger Close, either as a rebrand or with the studio closing down completely.

THe publisher has yet to comment on the matter however.

EA recently snapped up exclusive rights to develop new ‘core’ Star Wars games. At the time, the publisher said the games would be developed by DICE and Visceral using the Frostbite 3 engine.

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said the titles would also be based on completely original stories, and that its deal covered development of titles for console, PC, tablet and mobile.
