Developers and consumers alike will be granted free access to Unity’s Pro software if they purchase an Oculus Rift.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey helped to open Unity’s first Vision VR and AR event by revealing the deal, which will offer a four-month trial of Unity Pro – worth approximately $300 (£208) – to Rift owners. (Thanks, Ars.)
Luckey offered his hope that the bundle would motivate “everyone to start creating apps using Unity”.
“They can start thinking about being a creator, not a consumer,” he explained.
"For virtual reality, we knew a lot of the best ideas and applications weren’t going to come from people that you could predict. It was gonna come from people who would create things you wouldn’t expect."
Unity Pro joins an already healthy selection of freebies accompanying the £500 Rift consumer release, including sci-fi dogfighting title EVE Valkyrie and platformer Lucky’s Tale.
Luckey revealed his estimation than around 90 per cent of games and app created for the Oculus-powered Samsung Gear VR were developed in Unity.
As for first year sales of the Rift, Luckey teased: “We’ve shipped a couple hundred thousand developer kits, and that’s nothing compared to what we plan on doing this year."
