Studio rebranded as Skydance Interactive as it moves to focus on VR experiences

Evil Within co-developer The Workshop acquired by Star Trek producer Skydance

The Workshop, the studio that helped co-create games such as The Evil Within, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons and Armored Warfare, has been purchased by movie outlet Skydance Media.

Skydance is the US production firm behind films such as True Grit, World War Z, Terminator Genisys and the latest Star Trek and Mission Impossible instalments.

The Workshop was originally created in 2008 by founding members of Call of Duty developer Treyarch. Following the acquisition, the studio will be rebranded as Skydance Interactive.

The company said in an announcement that it would concentrate on producing and self-publishing VR titles for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR, but would continue to provide external support to console developers.

“We believe that virtual reality is the perfect medium by which to create an interactive platform where immersive storytelling intersects with active gameplay, which has long been a goal of ours at Skydance Media,” said Skydance CEO David Ellison.

“We are making a significant investment in virtual reality with the launch of Skydance Interactive, which allows us not only to develop and publish original games but also to extend the reach of our existing franchises."
