FlickrShow creator walks away with â?¬75,000 first prize

Final winners at Vodafone â?¬1m AppStar contest

Pedro Campos, an independent Portuguese mobile developer, has been awarded the €75,000 first prize in Vodafone’s AppStar competition for his FlickrShow app. The app was recognised for its ability to provide access to Flickr with slide shows, searches by keyword, username, colour and GPS-enabled location info.

Twenty-six year old Campos was awarded first place for his app following a public vote, having already won the €25,000 local prize he picked up in the first round of the competition.

Second place in the competition was awarded to a group of Italian students from Politecnico di Milano for their Cool Traveling app.

Raffaele Bisogno, Marco Cavone, Tommaso De Pace and Stefano Francavilla, who are studying for a Masters in Computer Science, will now receive a further €25,000, taking their total prize winnings from the Vodafone AppStar competition to €50,000.

Vodafone ran the AppStar competition to raise the profile of its 360 apps platform among developers – the company recently announced a publishing process for developers via the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) portal, enabling them to use open web technologies to create, monetise and distribute apps to JIL-enabled handsets.

Lee Epting, Director of Content Services at Vodafone, said: “Customers have an insatiable appetite for mobile apps, so it made sense to give them the chance to judge for themselves who our winner should be. It’s clear from the hard work and effort of our finalists that there is a lot of talent out there and it’s great to be able to reward the best of the best, while demonstrating our own commitment to supporting the developer community."
