Christopher Brookmyre will reveal all about his Bedlam novel and its video game follow-up

Find out why a British crime author made a sci-fi FPS at Develop Live

Plenty of authors have penned scripts for video games, but few have gone to the same lengths as British author Christopher Brookmyre.

The Scottish novelist has spent the majority of his writing career focused on crime novels, but he switched genres to write Bedlam. While its story tells of human trapped in a world of video games, the book’s connection to gaming runs far deeper: it is part of perhaps the first true game-and-novel tie-in, where the book was specifically written to be followed by a video game.

Sceptical? So was Brookmyre during the initial discussions with his publisher. And yet the hardback novel went on to top the UK sci-fi charts, and UK indie RedBedlam began to receive interest and funding for its video game adaptation.

Brookmyre himself will be taking to the stage to reveal more about this ambitious collaboration between the literary and gaming industries. He will talk about the creative process between writers and developers, and how both industries can benefit from working closer together.

Develop Live will be held at The Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, Scotland on Thursday, October 2nd. In addition to Brookmyre, speakers include Amazon’s Jesse Freeman, Glasgow Caledonian University’s Dr Romana Ramzan, indie developers Nicoll Hunt and James Parker, cyberpsychologist Berni Good and Preloaded’s Katie Goode.
