FoxNext Games expands with Cold Iron Studios acquisition

Fox’s recently set-up games division FoxNext (not to be confused with FoxDie, the retrovirus carried by Solid Snake) has acquired developer Cold Iron Studios. The Silicon Valley based outfit will be working on a new Alien game, as part of FoxNext’s “commitment to deliver new AAA offerings across numerous fan favorite properties and original games”. This game will be a shooter designed for consoles and PC.

This is happening despite expectations that another Alien game would be coming out of Creative Assembly, developer of the critically acclaimed Alien Isolation, a game which would be done a disservice by being labelled simply a “shooter”. It’s a hard act to follow and with Alien: Colonial Marines being a huge disaster in practically every way, all eyes will be on Cold Iron Studios to fit somewhere on latter end of the spectrum, between these two extremes.

“Cold Iron Studios has amazing design, craftsmanship and development talent that we are excited to welcome at FoxNext Games as we pursue our goal to build a multi-platform, multi-genre portfolio of great games,” says Aaron Loeb, president of studios at FoxNext Games. “I am a personal fan of Cold Iron’s previous work and all of us at FoxNext Games are thrilled to be working with them as they create an action-packed persistent world, steeped in the mysteries of this beloved Alien universe.”

“We believe in FoxNext’s vision and we are thrilled about the opportunity to explore an amazing and rich universe,” said Cold Iron Studios CEO Craig Zinkievich. “Our background in building online worlds and taking established franchises to the next level in interactive entertainment is a precise fit with our product roadmap ahead; we can’t wait to share more information soon.”
