Gameforge quits mobile development and lays off around 90 staff

German publisher Gameforge has laid off a fifth of its employees and is pulling out of the mobile games market.

Gameforge CEO Alexander Rsner told MediaBiz that mobile development had not been as lucrative or successful as the company had expected. He said that the PC free to play market, where Gameforge has been the most successful, has presented some interesting opportunities” while the mobile market was much harder.”

As a result the company has made the decision to restructure and focus on PC publishing, which unfortunately means many of their mobile team have been let go. This will also mean that all internal development will be put on hold according to Pocket Gamer.

The move sees an estimated 90 people lose their jobs, although that still leaves more than 300 employed by the company. Rsner promised that the company would assist those who have lost their job with finding a new one.

With Gameforge now focusing all its efforts on PC games you can probably expect to see it sign up more free to play titles. Some of the company’s biggest successes have been the likes of Orcs Must Die Unchained and TERA.
