Google offers ability to offer “introductory rates” on Play Store subscriptions

Google have today mentioned a few new features it’ll be adding for developers looking to build apps for the Google Play Store. The most interesting one for games developers has to be the option to provide limited-time discounted prices for subscriptions.

“For example, you can offer a subscription for $1 per month for the first three months before the normal subscription price kicks in,” wrote Larissa Fontaine, global head of apps business development at Google Play, in a blog post. “Along with local/custom pricing and free trials already offered, introductory pricing will help you acquire more subscribers and grow your subscription business.”

This will let consumers get a cheaper rate on subscriptions, which could be useful for developers hoping to sell subscriptions to their mobile game, or in the case of Failbetter’s Fallen London, a subscription for a game that’s typically been available and subscribed too largely on a web based platform beforehand.

It’s a big market for potential devs, with the Google Play Store having more than 1 billion active users. Not all of these are gamers, as the Play store is as much for getting health apps, ordering takeaways or Spotify as it is gaming, but it still opens up a new avenue for savvy game devs to monetise.

The move comes just a few months after Apple announced they’d offer automatically renewing subscriptions through its own App store, a feature that Google has already offered since 2012.
