But series producer Kazunori Yamauchi doesnâ??t see the costs as extravagant

Gran Turismo 5 budget put at $60m

Polyphony Digital has spent $60 million of Sony’s money through the five years of the Gran Turismo 5 project.

That’s according to an on-the-spot calculation by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi.

In an interview with Autoweek, Yamauchi was somewhat defensive about the game’s tremendous budget.

"There are other games that cost more," he said. “Considering the size and scale of the game, I think it’s probably a fairly small amount."

It is widely believed that GTA IV’s development budget is an industry record. Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies previously claimed the GTA IV budget was at $100 million.

Yamauchi also defended the Gran Turismo 5’s protracted development time.

“From our perspective, it doesn’t seem like that long a time," he said. "To make Gran Turismo 5, we threw away the legacy code from GT4 and started from scratch. It’s been five years from [the release of] GT4, and that’s the same amount of time it took to develop the first GT4. To create a game from scratch, that’s the amount of time it takes to get it right."
