How to get noticed online by the right recruiters

When you’re looking for a new role, being noticed online and approached by a specialist games recruiter or studio recruiter is a crucial part of your search.

Many roles, especially senior positions, are not advertised and often retained by a client’s internal recruitment team or a specialist agency recruiter.

To make sure you are noticed – being available and interesting online is essential.

General tips:

• Join Networks online such as LinkedIn, Xing, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etcetera, and ensure your current job title is listed – This way you will be identifiable in a search by recruiters who are looking online for people with relevant job titles and technical skills

• Make yourself known in the industry – Offer to talk at conferences about your specialist subject matter, publish articles for industry magazines, get involved with games industry networking groups on LinkedIn or forums like CGSociety. If you become recognised as an expert in your technical or commercial field, relevant recruiters will seek you out; it’s what they do every day!

• Complete your own research and find out who the leading recruiters are in your sector and ask to connect to them so you can be part of their network in the future. 1st connections via LinkedIn are a useful starting point in a search for great talent so make sure you are part of that. LinkedIn has proved to be a very useful jobseekers tool and is often where studio recruiters go first.

• Register with relevant recruitment agencies and industry sites which store CVs, keeping your profile up to date with them regularly so they know exactly what you are looking for and when to contact you without wasting your time.

Building a searchable presence is a two way process so ensure you are as open as possible to opportunities when speaking to relevant recruiters. Think about whether you can relocate, what overseas options might be appealing to you for example. The more you can consider the more options you will have.

• Identify the specific recruiters who are experts in your domain – For example if you work in a commercial role, find out who deals with the relevant positions for you and introduce yourself to them to ensure that you are part of their network. The recruiters are the ones who will have their finger on the pulse in terms of available roles or can introduce you to companies who may create a role for you because of your skill set.

• Treat this as a long-term strategy to manage your career moves now and in the future. When you have found and got to know the right recruiters build a long-term trusted relationship with them.

• Finally, and if you have time – Create a free online personal site – is a great site, that’s simple to set up, easy to use and looks great online.
