Mastertronic wants to take modest games to the fierce retail arena, World of Goo to draw first blood

Indie talent unites under new label

Indie developers are invited to join Mastertronic’s new and ambitious Great Indie Games group, a label built specifically to take small games to the wide open world of retail.

The first game to tread the water will be 2D Boy’s universally-acclaimed WiiWare and PC title World of Goo.

World of Goo will be burnt to disc and launch across the UK and Ireland as well as Australasia and Nordic territories, offering a new perspective for boutique indie talent: “does our game have the potential to win at retail?”

2D Boy’s well-regarded title may be an ideal test. It will launch for PC in July and will be priced at £14.99 and €19.99.

“With the many and varied PC games offerings out there, casual or otherwise, there is a place for great games that have been produced on a lower budget than normal by small development teams,” said Mastertronic MD Andy Payne.

“Every other creative art has Indies, indeed the games industry grew out of Indie pioneers,” he added, “so it is about time we helped them get back to where they belong. Great Indie Games is a vehicle to make this happen and I am proud to be representing this talent.”

Neil McKenna, who heads the publishing team at Mastertronic, added that there is a “slew of ‘pick up and play’ games on the market, some good, some not so good. World of Goo is simply fiendishly addictive and a game for everyone. I am sure that this will be a hit with our retail partners and consumers alike.”
