Best Original Video Game Score category added to the prestigious awards night

Ivor Novello Awards adds game audio honours

After 55 years in operation, the Ivors Committee is adding a sixth category to its awards lineup that will celebrate the highest standards in game audio.

Organisers of the event say the move was due to the game industry “maturing beyond recognition” with big budget orchestral scores regularly being commissioned by game studios.

Presented by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA), the new award category is entitled ‘Best Original Video Game Score’.

The new prize joins categories for ‘Best Song Musically & Lyrically’ as well as ‘Best Contemporary Song’, the ‘Album Award’, ‘Best Original Film Score’ and ‘Best Television Soundtrack’.

The ceremony will take place Thursday May 20. Registration is now open for potential nominees, with a February 5 deadline.

“The Ivors has always sought to reflect the ever-changing world of songwriting and composing,” said Mark Fishlock, BASCA director and member of The Ivors Committee.

“The video games market has matured beyond recognition and big budget orchestral scores are regularly being commissioned. Writing music for games also requires a number of specialist skills compared with conventional film scoring, such as non-linear and multi-layered composition. This is a very exciting development and one which hopefully will be fully embraced by the rapidly growing games world.”
