Supreme Commander developer back from the brink after failed Wildman Kickstarter

Lifeline for Gas Powered Games as Wargaming acquires studio

Troubled developer Gas Powered Games has been given a new lease of life as Wargaming swoops in to acquire the studio.

The developer, which had laid off most of its staff just days into its failed Wildman Kickstarter campaign, will now form part of Wargaming’s multiplatform push.

Gas Powered Games founder and CEO Chris Taylor and a number of other veteran developers on the team will also be staying with the company.

The deal comes just two weeks after Wargaming acquired FEAR developer Day 1 Studios, also based in the US, for $20 million.

"Gas Powered Games’ heritage and development pedigree shows us just how valuable an addition Chris and his company will make to the Wargaming family," said Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi.

"Gas Powered Games has a long track record of providing incredibly engaging triple-A gaming experiences and we can’t wait to start working with them."

Chris Taylor added: "Wargaming growth in recent years has been tremendous, and we’re looking forward to joining one of the fastest growing gaming companies in the world.

"I’m sure our experience and expertise will help us contribute even more to Wargaming’s global success."

Gas Powered Games appeared on the brink of closure of cancelling its Kickstarter for action RTS title Wildman just days before the crowdfunding campaign was officially due to end.

The project had raised just $500,000 of its $1.1 million target, with the funds required to keep the studio going as well as develop the title.

It is unclear if work will now continue on Wildman under new ownership, and how many of the studio’s staff will be retained.
