Everyone knows Media Molecule is famous for its user-generated content game LittleBigPlanet – which offers an advanced level creation tool it players.
But now Media Molecule could offer tools to other developers.
In his keynote talk opening the second day of the Montreal Game Summit, the studio’s lead architect Paul Holden detailed the studio’s work on HeapMon, a proprietary tool that monitor’s game memory usage – necessary for a title like LittleBigPlanet, which makes numerous calls to memory in its PS3 host hardware thanks to a vast amount of in-game content and processes.
Holden explained the studio built the tool, alongside the game engine itself, to map and control memory usage.
He added that the studio would like to share the PS3 tool with other studios.
"It would be great if we could release it for people to use – we could definitely get it released to PS3 developers with little difficulty," he said in a Q&A session at the end of his talk.
"It’s actually a very simple tool."
However he said that publisher Sony would need to give its approval first.
