Microsoft to sell Hololens further afield

Microsoft has said today that it’s planning to offer the ability to purchase its HoloLens augmented reality headsets to countries further afield.

Currently you can only buy a Hololens if you live in the United States or Canada, but under these new plans businesses and independent developers looking to pick up the device in Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom can now do so.

This still isn’t everywhere in the world, unfortunately, but it’s a step in the right direction for developers outside of North America who might be looking to develop for Microsoft’s augmented reality device. That doesn’t do much for the price though; the development model of the HoloLens comes in at $3k for a development model, while businesses can get a business pack for $5k. You can preorder your device here, it’ll ship out in November.

There’s still no public plans for a consumer version of the Hololens, while Microsoft work out their plans for the device and its development ecosystem. Microsoft have previously hinted the device might never release as a consumer device, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet. The Hololens is different to other VR headsets on the market because instead of presenting a whole new reality, Hololens is a clear headset that merely augments what you can see in the real world: think Pokémon GO’s AR capture mode, and you’re not a thousand miles from what you might expect to see on Microsoft’s AR device.
