Online games company Perfect World and a meat supplier called Sumpo Food Holdings have acquired Digital Extremes.
The studio’s latest game, F2P shooter Warframe, has proven a success for the firm and has consistently ranked in the top echelons of the Steam most-played games chart.
Its popularity has now attracted the attention of Chinese online games firm Perfect World, which also acquired City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios in 2011.
Curiously, the takeover is a joint bid between the publisher and a chicken meat supplier called Sumpo Food Holdings Limited. The acquisition is currently subject to due diligence procedings.
Digital Extremes was founded in 1993 in Ontario, Canada. As well as Warframe, the studio has worked on titles including Homefront, BioShock 2, Star Trek and The Darkness II.
