Polytron's sequel canned as developer declares departure from games industry

Phil Fish declares Fez 2 cancelled

Indie developer Phil Fish has announced that his sequel Fez II is cancelled, and that he is leaving the games industry in frustration.

A statement on the website of Fish’s studio Polytron Corporation reads: "Fez II is cancelled. I am done. I take the money and i run. This is as much as i can stomach.
This is isn’t the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign. You win."

Fez 2 was announced during E3 this year, meaning a follow up was due for the first game, which saw its tumultuous development process recorded in the documentary Indie Game: the Movie.

The news of the cancellation emerged on Twitter on Saturday night, with a Tweet on Polytron’s feed stating: "It’s with a heavy heart that we announce that Fez II has been cancelled and is no longer in development. We apologise for the disappointment."

Some have speculated that Fish’s decision to can the game comes as a result of recent accusations by GameTrailers producer Marcus Beer, who criticised the Fez creator in a recent edition of his Invisible Walls program for refusing to comment on the recent u-turn by Microsoft on its Xbox One self publishing policies.

However, the statement on Polytron’s website appears to refute that the decision comes from any single incident.

As of this latest development, Fish’s personal Twitter account is now locked.

Fish has often been at the centre of controversy in the media, never being one to shy from confronting the press about coverage and opinions of him and his work.
