Ex-employees keen to work with “good old mates down the road” again

Playtonic open to collaboration with Rare

New UK developer Playtonic Games, formed by a team of ex-Rare staff, has said it would be willing to collaborate with its former employers.

Speaking to the Guardian, studio head Gavin Price said the two companies are on very good term, and could work with Rare on some form of joint project in future. It would be a natural fit, given that the new studio aims to build games in the same vein as some of Rare’s earlier titles.

“You never know, there are some good old mates of ours down the road, they may want to do a little mute-studio collaboration,” said Price. “We’re just going to be open-minded. We’re not trying to look too far ahead. We’ll make the right decision when we get there.”

Price has implied that relationships between some Playtonic members, including himself, are so strong that the crew even knows what Rare is currently developing.

“I still chat to them,” Price said. “I know what they were working on when I left last year. It sounds really good.”

Rare’s next title has been teased intermittently over the last few months, although all signs point to a revival of Banjo Kazooie. Teaser art for Playtonic’s Project Ukulele suggest a title very similar to the early Banjo games.
