Introversion strikes indie gold with 'lock 'em up' roguelike

Prison Architect alpha raises $8 million

Prison Architect has raised over $8 million in sales since Introversion Software released the alpha version of the game last year.

A combination of Dungeon Keeper and Dwarf Fortress, over 250,000 have downloaded the title and made it the highest grossing in the studio’s history.

Considering introversion has released several highly recognized games – Darwinia, Multiwinia, Defcon, and Uplink – that’s a bit surprising, but until now none of these critically acclaimed games has actually sold more than $100,000.

“Our 250,000 units have generated almost $8 million worth of revenue which is a figure we would never have dreamed of achieving,” said a statement from Introversion.

“This investment by our alpha customers is enabling us to turn Prison Architect into the game we envisioned without having to make any creative sacrifices or cut any corners – this is the very reason we’re proud to be independent.”

The decision to release the game in alpha was made when the studio saw the success other developers were having on Kickstarter. Rather than take the beaten path, the indie team elected to go it alone

“We are also astonished at how well crowd-funding has worked for us,” the statement continued.

“When we decided to launch Prison Architect in alpha we looked at those who had gone before us and inspired by Kickstarter we decided to create our own system which would allow us to retain control over every aspect of the process.”
