In the latest in a long line of acquisitions, UK studio Rebellion has snapped up Archer Maclean’s Mercury developer Awesome Developments.

Rebellion’s Awesome acquisition

The deal continues last year’s buying spree, which included the buyouts of Strangelight and former SCi studio Core. The move brings Rebellion’s total development headcount to 280. However, studio boss Jason Kingsley insists that acquisition is not a central element of the company’s plans.

“All our acquisitions have been based on the opportunity coming up and us reacting to it positively – we’re not actively seeking this sort of acquisition.” Kingsley told MCV. “However, when the chance to recruit almost 30 talented staff members comes about we’d have been crazy not to consider it.

“We have some world class games coming out this year based on huge licences, so we hope to have a couple of number one hits, if not more.”

A spokesperson for Awesome added: “Teaming up with a super-developer of Rebellion’s world class calibre will catapult us into the next generation. We have had a lot of critical praise for the Mercury series of games and we are very proud to have achieved that success. Working as a larger company secures our future and means we can build on that foundation and create even more award winning titles.
