Microsoft held talks with AMD over a potential acquisition of the chip manufacturer, according to a report.
A source “familiar with the matter” told KitGuru the computing giant contacted AMD several months ago for buyout talks. It is not clear however whether anything will come of those discussions.
No further details of the potential acquisition were provided. It was noted however that a deal could be within Microsoft’s reach, given the $1.81bn value of AMD and Microsoft’s excess of cash to spend.
AMD is already a key partner for Microsoft’s Xbox One console, providing the chips that power the hardware. AMD’s tech is also housed in Sony’s PS4 consoles.
