Broken Sword Kickstarter success buoys studio into working on adventure sequel

Revolution greenlights Beneath a Steel Sky 2

Revolution Software is working on a sequel to 1994 adventure game Beneath a Steel Sky, Develop can reveal.

The UK studio had originally stated it would only make the title if its Broken Sword Kickstarter reached $1m.

But despite falling short and garnering $800k, still double the initial funding goal, Revolution co-founder Tony Warriner has told Develop that the huge success of its crowdfunding campaign has inspired it to begin work on Beneath a Steel Sky 2.

Development of the title will begin after the release of Broken Sword.

"We’re delighted by the recent level of interest in a sequel to Beneath a Steel Sky and are currently discussing design ideas for this project which we plan to go into development following the release of Broken Sword – The Serpent’s Curse.

“We’re deeply touched that our Steel Sky fans are as enthusiastic today as they were when the original game released in 1994."

Beneath a Steel Sky 2 is to be developed for iOS, Android, PC, Linux, OSX whilst Revolution is also looking into the possibility of a console release.

The studio’s Kickstarter campaign for Broken Sword: The Serpent’s Curse accrued $771,561 from 14,032 backers, with 26 contributors pledging more than $1,000 and another two donating more than $5,000 into the project.

The title also received extra donations from Paypal backers bringing the game’s total contributed funds to around $820k.
