Rockstar’s PS2 classics on PS4 have been a success

Take-Two has said that Rockstar is currently the top publisher of digital PS2 classics on the PS4 store.

The publisher has described its selection of titles as a tremendous success”, citing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Bully in particular.

Take-Two’s overall digital revenues grew 36 per cent year-on-year to $835.2m. More importantly, that represents more than half (54 per cent) of its total net revenue. Recurrent consumer spending was up 33 per cent and now accounts for over a quarter (26 per cent) of all revenue.

We continue to capitalise in our industry’s ongoing transition towards digital distribution,” boss Strauss Zelnick told investors, as transcribed by Seeking Alpha. In addition of virtual currency for Grand Theft Auto Online and NBA 2K, recurrent consumer spending was enhanced by other offerings including downloadable add-on content led by Borderlands, WWE 2K, Sid Meier’s Civilization and Evolve.

WWE SuperCard, which has now been downloaded more than 10 million times, and it’s our most financially successful free-to-play mobile offering. And NBA 2K Online in China, which delivered record revenues and now has over 31m registered users.”

Take-Two also revealed that 20 per cent of its console game sales are now digital. That number hits 90 per cent on PC. In addition, half of last-gen console games sales are now digital, too.

Digital distribution is disproportionately benefiting our catalogue, as it gives consumers the opportunity to buy older titles that no longer receive physical shelf space,” Zelnick added.

In particular, Rockstar Games has been having tremendous success with their hit PlayStation 2 titles such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Bully, which are now available for download in the PlayStation 4, via the consoles emulation technology. Rockstar Games is the top publisher in the PlayStation 2 classics and PlayStation 4 program with three of the five highest selling games.”
