Popular MMO RuneScape is to break from its browser roots and go multi-platform, the developer’s CEO has revealed to Develop.
Jagex boss Mark Gerhard said the studio’s ambition for the game was to make it ubiquitous on any device that is connected to the internet, as well as be available in multiple languages.
He said that players could expect a major step forward in innovation for the RPG in the coming months.
Whilst Gerhard did not specify which platforms and devices RuneScape would be expanding to, the game could perceivably be released on smartphones and tablets, whilst in the past Jagex has tried to bring the title to consoles.
"Our vision was to be platform and language agnostic,” said Gerhard.
“Going global with it, and being ubiquitous on any device that’s connected to the internet is very much where we’re headed. There’s going to be a big step forward on that front in just a few months time.
“It will be a major innovative step forward, and a square, solid move towards being multi-platform.”
He added: “The number one focus for us is for our players to have as much fun as they can with their friends as often as they want and wherever they are, and whatever ecosystem they are. We’re very much pushing hard in the direction to make it a reality.”
Jagex recently announced that it had passed 200 million registered users on RuneScape, making it one of the most popular MMOs in the world.
