Nation aims to succeed globally with a new trade body, national event and innovation centre

Russia to establish national game body

Russia is preparing to unite its native game companies under a national umbrella organisation backed by Medvedev’s government.

The National Russian Association of Game Industry (NRAGI) is expected to be established by the end of October, during the nation’s first ever dedicated games industry conference.

Known as the ‘All-Russian Conference on Game Industry’, the event hopes to set out a roadmap for improving Russia’s position in the global game development league.

The conference was announced this week by three Russian ministry bodies; the Federal Agency for Management of Special Economic Zones, the State Academy of Innovations, and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

The NRAGI is expected to build bridges with other international game associations – a necessary step for a sector which succeeds domestically but has hitherto struggled to make a global impact.

Conference organizers state that Russia’s new game body will “unite companies from the Russian Games and Multimedia Industry as well as creating a communication platform to get in touch with official organizations and business representatives from the international games industry.”

The ministry bodies are also keen to create a national game development ‘committee’, likely used to initiate best-practice policies and general assistance for native studios.

The nation, which according to latest CIA estimates has a population of 140 million, is also set to establish a “United Centre of Development and Innovations”.

The All-Russian Conference on Game Industry (ACGI) will not deviate from the game show template: it offers exhibition spaces, networking zones and press conferences. It will take place in the town of Dubna from October 27 to 29.
